 Dr. Salim Ali did much research in this area and described breeding and feeding habits for various birds apart from their role in the food chain. Thattekad also means flat forest. The area is an evergreen low-land forest situated amid the Periyar River. It is situated in Njiyapilli Hill and was set up in 1983 by the government of Kerala under the recommendation of Dr. Salim Ali in the early 1930s. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary

Known after the famous or nithologist Dr Salim Ali, Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is among the principal attractions in Munnar. It is located on the foothills of the Western Ghats covering an area of 25 km sq. Also referred as Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, this is among the richest bird habitats in the world.
