History

Till 1983, the 820 km long forest comprised three separate wildlife reserves, each having flora and fauna of its own. The park was set up when C. Rajgopalachari, who was on a trip to hunt in the wild, had a change of mind and expressed his wish to make it a wildlife reserve. The earliest of all these, the Rajaji sanctuary came into existence in 1948. Motichur was set up in 1964 and Chilla in 1977. The reserve comprises an enriched fossil trail dating back to ancient history. The Shivalik trail is said to be as old as ten million years.
